A bitcoin journey through Hong Kong

A full day in Hong Kong where everything is paid for in bitcoin: coffee, a tailored suit, lunch and drinks. You will need a Lightning wallet: four of the five places take Lightning only, and Montaj takes both Lightning and on-chain bitcoin. Paying is quick, you scan a QR code at the counter and pay from your phone in seconds. Start with coffee at Central Market, then take the Star Ferry to Tsim Sha Tsui for a suit fitting and lunch, both a short walk from the pier. Ferry back to Central in the afternoon and finish on Wyndham Street at night. Load your Lightning wallet with enough sats for the day before you set out.

    Café

    Chart Coffee

Your first bitcoin payment of the day. A small coffee bar inside Central Market on Queen’s Road Central, serving espresso and filter coffee at a counter surrounded by plants. Order, scan the Lightning QR, and you’re done before the milk is steamed. From here, walk to the Central piers and take the Star Ferry to Tsim Sha Tsui.

    Shopping

    Montaj Bespoke Tailors

The big purchase of the journey. Montaj has been tailoring in Hong Kong since 1968, on the 8th floor of the Universal Commercial Building on Peking Road, a few minutes from the Star Ferry pier. They make made-to-measure suits, jackets and shirts that you can pay for entirely in bitcoin. This is the one stop that takes on-chain as well as Lightning, which is handy for a larger payment. Book an appointment first and allow time for a second fitting.

    Bar

    Frank's Records

Evening drinks on bitcoin. A cocktail and vinyl bar on the 7th floor of Harilela House, Wyndham Street, with a wood interior, a long bar and shelves of records. Quieter, good for a first round. Open until 2am.

    The Aftermath

The last stop, and the last sats of the day. A basement bar further down Wyndham Street with painted murals and live bands. Make sure you get here before the music ends: bands usually play from around 9pm to 11:30pm. The bar stays open until 2am.
