Pay with bitcoin in 30 seconds

You don't need to be an expert. If you can scan a QR code with your phone, you can pay with bitcoin.

  1. 1

    Get a Lightning wallet

Lightning is the quick way to pay with bitcoin: payments arrive in seconds and cost almost nothing. Install Blink, then put a little bitcoin in it.

Our pick Blink Simple to set up and made for paying at the counter. Let it look after your bitcoin for you, or hold it yourself: Blink does both. Get Blink ↗

To put bitcoin in it, buy some on an exchange and send it to your wallet, or buy it in person at a bitcoin OTC shop. In Hong Kong those are usually much cheaper than bitcoin ATMs.

We're not paid to recommend Blink, and this isn't financial advice. Only keep what you're happy to spend.

  2. 2

    Pay at the counter

Ask to pay with bitcoin before you order, or when you're ready to pay. They'll show you a QR code: on a BASIC POS (our own bitcoin till, which prints you a receipt too), a screen, a tablet or a printed card. Scan it with your wallet, check the amount, and press pay. It's done in a few seconds.

  3. 3

    Tap "I paid here"

Back on the place's page here, tap "I paid here". It tells the next person that bitcoin still works there, and adds a stamp to your bitcoin passport.

Good to know

What if the QR code doesn't work?

Check that your wallet is a Lightning wallet and has enough in it. Some places use an on-chain bitcoin address instead, which any bitcoin wallet can pay, though it can take a few minutes to confirm. If it still won't go, pay another way and let us know with "Report a problem" on the place's page.

Lightning or on-chain?

Lightning is instant and almost free, which is why it's used at counters. On-chain is the original way: it works with any bitcoin wallet, but takes a few minutes and costs a little more.

Will the price be the same?

Most places charge their usual price, worked out in bitcoin at the moment you pay, and some even give you a discount for paying in bitcoin. Your wallet shows the amount before you confirm.
